Non-Formal Primary School for Slum Children

Non-Formal Primary School for Slum Children

Since 2006 Grameen Shikkha has been organizing non-formal primary schools for slum children in the slums of Sections 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 in Mirpur area under Dhaka City Corporation. Currently there are 52 such schools, each with 20 to 25 children. Financed by IDKIDS Foundation of France, the YY Foundation based in Germany, the Shamdasani Foundation of Hongkong, Professors David and Kathee Jordan of USA, and Ms. Celine Delacharlerie of Singapore. These one-room schools, registered with the Ministry of Primary & Mass Education of Bangladesh Government, provide primary education – from grade-1 through grade-5 over a period of five year – to poor slum children in these areas. Grameen slum schools are using public school text books supplied by Government and students are eligible to take part in national primary school finals organized by the Directorate of Primary Education.
