Mr. Zafor Dewan, Grameen Telecom Scholar

Expression of Gratitude to Grameen

I am Zafor Dewan (in the middle in photo), father: Late Abdul Khaleque Dewan, mother: Sajeda Begum. I have another sibling. I am a permanent resident of Madhabpasha village and Madhabpasha union under Airport Upazilla of Barisal district. I completed my primary from Madhabpasha Govt. Primary School. Then I took admission in Madhabpasha Chandradeep Secondary School, which is now called Madhabpasha Chandradeep High School & College.

I completed secondary education from this school with distinction and got admitted in Amritalal Dey College in Barisal from where I successfully completed my higher secondary. Then I took admission in the Physics Department of the University of Dhaka in the 2007-2008 session. Having completed my graduation I took admission in the Nuclear Engineering Department of the same university for post graduation, which I successfully completed. Since 2016 I have been working as a teacher of the Nuclear Engineering Department of the University of Dhaka.

When I was a student of grade-10 I received the Grameen Shikkha scholarship, which continued until 2015. I am grateful to Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus who created the Grameen Bank, which has been contributing to the social-economic development of the country since its inception. Not only this, he has also created Grameen Shikkha, which has been helping poor meritorious students with financial assistance so they can carry on their education. The long term Grameen scholarship not only encouraged me in my studies, it also helped me financially. I would like to express my gratitude toward this organization.

Finally, I wish every success of Grameen. I believe it will contribute more and more by increasing its number of scholarships to poor meritorious students in the rural areas of the country.

Dr. Zinath Ruksana, Citi Scholar

This is my great pleasure that I got the opportunity to tell my real life story to the platform from where I received intensive financial and mental support to reach my present stage. I’m Dr. Zinath Roksana from Bogura, Bangladesh. I completed my M.B.B.S and internship from Sir Salimullah Medical College, Dhaka. I am honored to be one of the recipients of the Citi Scholarship for Young Women. I’m very much grateful to Grameen Shikkha for its generous support for my education. I ha

d received the scholarship from 2010-2013 which helped me cope with my bad days as my father was the only earning person of our family and it was very difficult for him to bear all the educational expenses of me and my siblings. This scholarship and the generosity and continuous support from Grameen Shikkha helped me focus on my studies. Honestly speaking, I couldn't think of reaching my dream to become a doctor and serve the humanity if I didn't receive this support from them.

During the period of 2007-2014 our family was passing hard times due to financial strain and it was really difficult for my parents even to arrange food and cloth for all of us, and continuing with my studies was really a dream then for me. During this crisis Grameen extended its financial support so I could continue my studies. I’m really grateful for that.

Just to give my updates, in March 2019 I got chance to get enrolled with Dhaka Medical College (DMC) for Postgraduation degree in Anesthesiology, and later I joined Bangladesh Civil Service in December, 2019, and currently I'm serving as medical officer at Upazilla Health Complex, Sonagazi, Feni. Besides that I’m trying to complete the United States Medical Licensing Examination. I already passed the USMLE Step1 exam in August, 2018. Now I am preparing for USMLE Step 2 ck (clinical knowledge) exam.

Thank you once again Grameen Shikkha for your generous support throughout the journey. I’m looking forward to the day I would be able to help other students just as you have helped me.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Zinath Roksana

Eng. Ramzan Ali, Grameen Shikkha Higher Education Scholar

I come from a very poor family. My father was a small village grocer who used to earn between BDT 3,000 to 4,000 a month. It was almost impossible for my parents to bear the educational expenses of eight children. Sometimes they had to borrow money from others to pay for our education. At that moment Grameen Shikkha came forward to help me. From grade-8 until completion of my post graduation from Civil Engineering from Rajshahi University of Science & Technology (RUET) I received Grameen

Shikkha scholarship. Currently I am working as Assistant Engineer (Civil) at Local Government Engineering Department of Bangladesh Government. I look forward to helping poor students in their studies just as I have been helped by Grameen.

My father was a small grocer who always dreamed I would become a doctor when I would grow up, and my mother had worked her best to realize the dream. Their dreams were not just baseless fantacies because from nursery to high school I had always fared good in all school and public exams and hence lived up to their expectations. Finally, with the grace of the Almighty, I passed the public medical admission tests and got admitted at Dhaka Medical College. But all our dreams were about to be shat

tered when my father, the only earning member in the family, became seriously ill and my family faced serious financial crisis. Right at that moment Grameen Shikkha came forward to rescue me with a scholarship that was of tremendous help in continuing with my medical studies. Now I am working as a doctor at the Armed Forces Medical College in Dhaka. I will always remain grateful to Grameen for its timely and very helpful assistance in my becoming a doctor, realize the dream of my parents, and work for my country and its people.

Mr. Imran Hossain, Green Children Scholar

Since 2014, I, Md. Imran Hossain, have been serving as a faculty member at the Department of Finance in the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh and currently working as an assistant professor. Before joining the department as a faculty, I completed my MBA and BBA from the same department with CGPA 4.00 out of 4.00 (1st merit position) and 3.94 (2nd merit position) respectively. Furthermore, receiving the prestigious Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship 2018 fully funded by the Australian Government

, I have successfully completed Master of Applied Finance degree from Monash University, Australia with CGPA 4.00 (out of 4.00) and received several awards (e.g., top achieving student award, Dean's award, Unit prizes and so on). I have a plan to pursue PhD in Finance arena from a reputed international university soon, In Sha Allah. I have five research papers published in peer-reviewed international and national journals and many more are waiting in the pipeline. My current areas of research interest include- Empirical Corporate Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions and Capital Markets.

Born in a poor family, I had to undergo a lot of financial struggles during student life. It was very difficult for my father, an autorickshaw driver, to bear our educational expenses (me and my three other brothers and sisters) in addition to bearing family expenditures. Then, Grameen Bank and Grameen Shikkha came forward with their financial assistance programs including scholarships and education loans which helped us a lot to continue our studies uninterruptedly during high school, college, and university levels. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of Grameen Bank and Grameen Shikkha. Hope that these two institutions will continue their financial assistance to the poor but meritorious students in a greater extent in future. Wishing all the very best!

Mr. Nazmul Islam Apu, Hessnatur Scholar

I am Nazmul Islam, currently doing my master’s in information engineering and computer science at Rhine Wall University of Applied Sciences in Germany. I always feel very proud and lucky to be member of Grameen Shikkha family. In 2014 I got an opportunity to participate in the One Young World Summit as a delegate of Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus which was held in Dublin, Ireland. By attending the summit I gathered lots of experiences from the pioneers of young entreprene

urs from different disciplines. I was lucky enough to meet many global leaders there and share my ideas with them. This event was a turning point in my life as it reshaped the ways of my thinking about career, business, technologies and ideas. Moreover, Grameen Shikkha supported me by providing scholarship during my bachelor studies in engineering – during the most turbulent time of my life when I lost my long ailing mother and suffering from extreme financial and family troubles. So Grameen Shikkha is always part of the successful journey. In fact, every year they provide financial support and practical training to a large number of students which are much needed in our country. I wish good luck to Grameen Shikkha family and I am always grateful to them.

Advocate Ali Hossain, Dr. Wolfram Engel Scholar, Global Giving Scholar

I was born in 1989 in a poor family in the village of Darirajnagar, post office: Jamirta, Upazilla: Singair, district: Manikganj. It was extremely difficult for my parents even to manage food for a family with seven children. Higher education was mere a dream. Still my parents got me admitted in grade-1 in Noadda Rajnagar Govt. Primary School. And thus began my education life. My father would catch fish during the rainy season and work in the field as a sharecropper during the dry season. I u

sed to help my father in his works. In the winter it was a routine for me to get up early in the morning and go for fishing with my father in the biting cold. If we would not go for fishing we surely would have to starve. I could miss school but could not afford not going for the daily fishing job. This way I completed primary school with good academic performance.

Then I went to get admitted in grade-6 in Jamirta S. G. Multilateral High School. I felt very helpless when I found that my parents were not able to afford the 280 taka needed for my admission in grade-6. My dream of going to high school was almost shattered when one of my aunts came forward with the money to help me get admitted in high school. I started high school in the year 2000 and became topper in grade-6 finals. I performed very well in grade-7 finals too. When I was in grade-8 the local Grameen Bank manager came to our place and said that he was looking for a poor but brilliant student for a Grameen Shikkha scholarship. The headmaster of Jamirta High School strongly recommended my name for the scholarship and eventually I received the scholarship called “Dr. Wolfram Engel Scholarship.” Since then until completion of my higher studies I received scholarship support from Grameen Shikkha under different scholarship programs.

This tremendously helped me carry on my studies and I will never forget the assistance. In 2005 I completed secondary school finals from Jamirta High School with a GPA of 4.06 (out of 5.00) and took admission in higher secondary at Jahangirnagar University School & College. In 2007 I completed higher secondary finals with GPA of 4.10 (out of 5.00) and I took admission in Bangladesh Islami University for a legal degree and completed my LL.B course in 2012 with a GPA of 3.68 on a 4.00-point scale. I joined the Manikganj Bar in 2012 as a probationary lawyer. In 2017 I took admission in ASA University of Bangladesh for a postgraduation degree in Law and I successfully completed my LL.M with a GPA of 3.58. Then I sat for the Bar Council exams, which I passed in December 2018, and in January 2019 I joined the Manikganj Bar Council (Membership No. 520). I am doing my job with utmost sincerity to serve my country and its people. I would request all to keep me in their prayers.

I began to realize what financial hardship was when I started going to school. It was difficult for my parents to manage a seven-member family with the little means they had and several times my father had to borrow to bear the educational expenses of me and my siblings. I had always been the first boy in my class from 2001 to 2011 and had received talent pool scholarship in every public exam. In 2013 I got admitted in Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) at its Mechan

On the Way to Conquer the Obstacles

“A man without ambition is like a beautiful worm--it can creep, but it cannot fly.”

– Henry Ward Beecher

Ambition is putting a ladder against the sky. I had a little dream in my childhood – to take proper education only. I never wanted to be rich; I just wanted to be a complete person with knowledge and power. The power with which I can contribute to solving the problems ar

ound me. Coming from a big family with five siblings, I didn’t use to feel the hardship of poverty until a certain age. Our happiness was sharing a single egg for breakfast with rice, wearing the same clothes in both Eid festivals and watching TV on Friday in the neighbor’s house. I got to know about the limitations of my parents when I was in grade Five. As a fourth-class government staff, my father was struggling to buy a Guidebook or paying the coaching fee for my Primary Scholarship Exam preparation. Fortunately, I had some excellent teachers who helped me by exempting the fees and guided me to build the base of education.

In consequence, I gifted them Primary Scholarship in the talent pool category and later Junior Scholarship in the same category from a different high school. Grade Nine appeared with additional burdens for buying a bunch of books with the supplementary materials for the SSC (Secondary School Certificate) exam preparation. Grameen Shikkha, a sister concern of Grameen Bank, then came forward to assist me in fulfilling my dream. With their contribution in my education, I completed the SSC and HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate) exam with top-notch results, which led me to get admitted into the top engineering school in the country –Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). I was a Grameen Shikkha scholarship holder until the end of my graduation from BUET.

As the scholarship drove away from the difficulties of carrying my education costs, I could concentrate more on my studies and stand in the 8th position within a big class. In parallel, I worked as a private tutor by drawing out some hours from my busy days and helped my family by taking some extra responsibilities. After my bachelor, I worked in AKS Steel for two years and then moved to the USA to fulfill my dream. I earned my MS in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University. While working as a Research Assistant (RA), I conducted research on Cancer Cell (CTC) separation from the cardiovascular system using a numerical approach. After the successful completion of my graduate study, I worked shortly at GE Appliances as a Manufacturing Engineering Co-Op (Intern). However, I wanted to build my career in the semiconductor industry due to my interest in micro-nano technology, and I dreamt of working in the top company of this field. Now I work at Intel, the leading semiconductor company in the world. At last, my hard work paid off, thanks Grameen Shikkha and all who supported me these years to reach my goal. “A dream doesn't become a reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work,” said by Colin Powell.

The role of GSRD Scholarship of GRAMEEN SHIKKHA PROGRAMME in my life…….

Scholarships are to reward students' academic achievements and educational programs. To grow new abilities, receiving a scholarship is a big achievement. With the economic benefits, getting a scholarship can open the way to various educational centers as well as employment opportunities. This is actually a Golden opportunity for genuine aspirants.

I am Nur-E-Saba, cu

rrently working at the Department of Economics, Dhaka Commerce College, Dhaka. I received the GSRD Scholarship under the management of GRAMEEN SHIKKHA since 2005 from Madhaiya Branch, Chandina, Cumilla of GRAMEEN Bank when I was in class nine. The monthly scholarship amount was 600 Taka. When I was in university I received the GSRD Higher Education Scholarship which was 3000 Taka a month.

At that time my other siblings were also studying. So with all other expenses my family was struggling to make ends meet effectively.

The increase in the cost of school, college, and university fees was the number one reason for which this scholarship was helpful to me. Therefore, it’s highly advantageous for a student to continue her studies and keep out of all the financial stress.

Furthermore, college or university students also have to go through with food and travel costs. These costs build up slowly and tend to cause a lot of harassment. But receiving a scholarship that takes care of all these costs is highly advantageous.

So the contribution of GSRD Scholarship of GRAMEEN SHIKKHA PROGRAMME to end my education life smoothly and start my working life without any hindrance is acknowledged in my life.

Thank you GRAMEEN SHIKKHA PROGRAMME!

Mr. Shohelur Rahman, Late Syeda Saleha Khatun Scholar, Late Kazi Hyder Jan Scholar

I was born in a poor family with another two brothers and three sisters. From the very early stage of my life I had to face financial crisis, which continued throughout my whole education life. My parents, however, tried their best so I could complete my education. My mother was a Grameen Bank borrower. I completed secondary school finals in 2004 and higher secondary finals in 2006 from Goalanda and then got admitted in Jahangirnagar University to study Environmental Science. When I was

a student of Jahangirnagar University I was suffering from extreme financial crises that almost stopped my higher education as my family was totally unable to financially support my education. At that time Grameen Shikkha offered me a scholarship and stood beside me at the very critical moment of my life. And I will remain grateful to Shikkha forever.

After completion of my graduation I started preparations for Bangladesh Civil Service examinations. I appeared for the first time for the 33rd BCS exams. After a long and tiresome journey (preliminary, written, and viva voce) and by the grace of Almighty Allah I qualified as a civil servant (BCS Ansar Cadre). I joined Bangladesh Ansar and VDP on 7th August, 2014 under the Ministry of Defense. After completion of the one year basic training, I was posted in Longodu, Rangamati as commanding Officer (current charge) of 1 Ansar Battalion. I am doing my job with utmost sincerity.”

Mr. Abdul Alim, GSRD Scholar

I am Abdul Alim, currently a Lecturer at Government Shaheed Bulbul College, Pabna. I finished primary education from a BRAC school in my village. My father, now dead, was a poor day laborer and I had to help him with his works in the field. My mother was a Grameen Bank borrower. I proved to be a meritorious student and my parents, despite financial difficulties, were very enthusiastic about their children’s education. I got a government scholarship at junior high school level and was pl

aced in the talent pool. This changed my life and I was selected for a scholarship from Grameen Shikkha from grade 9 which I received from 2005 to 2016, until completion of my higher education. Unfortunately, my father died from a thunder stroke in 2005 when he was working in the field. My elder brother, a day laborer, took over the responsibility of the family. He had already married and could hardly help the family with his meager income. The Grameen scholarship gave me tremendous help in continuing my education. I passed both secondary and higher secondary finals with golden GPA (A+ in every subject) and was selected for admission in the University of Dhaka. Besides my scholarship from Grameen Shikkha I also worked as private tutor to bear the expenses for myself and my younger brother’s studies. I finished both graduation and post graduation in Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering with first class. I sat for the Bangladesh Civil Service exams in 2015 and was selected as a Lecturer of Chemistry in 2016. Interestingly, I got posting at the same college from which I had finished my higher secondary. I am also proud that my younger brother is also studying Chemistry at the University of Dhaka. I am extremely grateful to Grameen for giving me financial support for more than a decade.
