At that time I was a science student of 11th grade at Nawab Faizunnessa Government College in Laksam sub-district of Comilla district. Scholarship amount was Tk. 250 per month. As the scholarship was reserved for that college, my scholarship ceased after a period of two years. Then I was awarded theQueen Sofia Scholarship by Grameen Shikkha. The Queen Sofia Scholarship ceased after three years and I was awarded another scholarship called Jim and Achana Ball Scholarship sponsored by Mr. Jim Ball and Mrs. Achana Ball. Amount of this scholarship is also Tk. 500 per month.

My father is a poor trader who sells on the street and who can hardly help me in my expenses for education. I have a younger brother who is handicapped. We don’t have any land or home and have been living in hired house for 27 years. Before I received the Grameen Shikkha scholarship I had to depend on the mercy of my relatives for my educational expenses. But I was hard working and I got Government scholarship in grade V and was placed in the talent pool. In 8th grade I again competed for the Government scholarship and this time too I achieved it, although in ordinary grade. But I was always worried about my future education because of financial hardship of my family. Since Grameen Shikkha started giving me scholarship support, I have been able to carry on my studies. It was never possible for me to be in higher education if Grameen Shikkha and my generous sponsors were not with me. My only hope is to carry on my studies, be self reliant and help my family.

I started to receive Grameen Shikkha scholarship about five years ago. My father is an illiterate poor peasant and none of my elder brother and sister ever went to school. I have another four siblings. Two of them could not go beyond grade three. One of my younger sisters is mentally retarded. The last of my siblings, a brother, in now in his early years in primary school. We

were very hard up and the scanty land that we possessed could not feed us for more than a couple of moths during the year. So my mother, who is also illiterate, became a borrower of Grameen Bank. After I had completed primary, my family was not able to manage the fees for my admission in high school. If one of my relatives had not paid the fees for me, my education would have stopped right there.

About five years ago one day I was informed by the local Grameen Bank branch manager that a scholarship program for poor students was going to start and he asked me to submit my papers. The name of the sponsor was Dr. Wolfram Engel, a foreigner who had business in Bangladesh. At that time I was a 9th grade student at Jamirta S.G. High School in Singair sub-district of Manikganj district. I was fortunate to qualify for the scholarship, which was in the name of the sponsor himself. I started to receive Tk. 250 every month. In secondary school finals I got ‘A-’ and got admitted in grade 11 at Jahangirnagar University College in Savar, Dhaka. Later I was given another scholarship, called the Grameen Shikkha-Global Giving Scholarship, and I am now receiving Tk. 500 per month. My earlier scholarship is given to another student. I could not fare very well in higher secondary finals and got ‘B+’. Now I am doing graduation in Law at a university in Dhaka and planning to bcome a lawyar after I have finished the course.

Grameen Shikkha scholarship support means a lot to me. Without it I would never have been able to carry on my studies. Now I am looking forward to a better future for myself and my family. I know Grameen Shikkha is there with me and I am confident one day I will be able to fullfil my dreams.
